Rothman's Porsche 956 MK5 rebuild - suggestions? 14 years 9 months ago #6647

The 956 is a beautiful Car. Trying to restore a handful of my favorite Tamiya RCs as well, starting with the Rothman's 956, which I love more than the Newman. Unfortunately, missing a few items, including a new spur gear and decal set. Any suggestions on where I can find those, or what cars might have compatible parts?

Hi,
the ROTHMANS Tamiya Porsche 956 is a good looking car and a racing champion replica.
I have a NIB brand new in the original plastic Tamiya kit#42 Porsche 956 body set and new decals[the driver figure is also in body set].
I would take $100usd plus shipping for the complete body and decals.
send me a email.

ciao

Hi rous2000, can't help you out (other than suggest Ebay :( ), I just wanted to say welcome on board & hope you hang around :)

Edou is the man to help with what bits might work from other cars, and I seem to remember eddrick was doing something similar ... hopefully they'll post here :)

Welcome rous2000! :)

The 956 is a beautiful car indeed and I already looked a bit at info on the spur you are looking for.
That's giving me a bit of trouble because of the restriction of the particular manual.
But I'll try to find out if all the Racing Masters (58042, 58049 and 58052) share the exact same gears.
And hopefully some other (later) models too...
I'll have to get back on that though.

Decals has become difficult lately because of Tamiya coming down on the sellers of reproduction.
So you'd have to find a scan (and get it printed) or an original decal set - the latter most likely on eBay.
Or have a look at robracer's offer of course...
You could up your chances of finding what you are looking for by placing an ad in the wanted section or on the home page .

Wish you good hunting in any case. ;)

I can tell you the parts number for the diff is 50173 (5173 or SP173). 7-digit parts number 9805437.
So maybe you could save that as an eBay search at least and see if it pops up...
It is a shared component with the 58049 Toyota Tom's, 58052 Newman Porsche and 58053 the Road Wizard.

Beyond that the same gears are also used on the 58068 Lotus Honda and the 58069 Williams Honda...
That item has parts number 9005144.

Edou, Jonny Retro, thanks for the help. That gives me a few options for places to search. Looks like I'll still need to get lucky with the differential.

Thanks Robracer for the offer. Are the Decals Rothmans or is it just "Racing"?

Any idea whether they will release a Rothmans 956 version of the RM01, on top of the Toms and Newman bodies? Has this been addressed on a separate discussion?

Another question ... I recall that the speed controller use to jam frequently on the resister, causing the resistor to burn. Any suggestions on avoiding that?

We did have some topics about the new Racing Masters but not a brainstorm about what might still come...
I think it's a very cool chassis myself and suspect to see many more body options. :cheer:
If you want to run the car, I'd just put an ESC in it. That'll definitely prevent the resistor from burning up. ;)

Hi,
these only have 'racing'.
No tobacco[Rothmans] labels on any of the produced Tamiya decals for the 956[1984-85].
As far as I know, maybe a few for you Euro's?? IDK!?
I think Tamiya stopped producing them, since most of the world and the USA banned tobacco labels.
Would'nt want kids playing with toy cars to see the tobacco labels and start smoking because of what they might of seen on a toy car!?

The USA banned them on any KIDS products in the early 1980's.
A few other stickers got thru customs hidden in other cars decals sets.
Like some of the Ferrari stickers in the later 1980's.
I know if the primary sponsor was some kind of tobacco company[IE;Marlboro Mclaren], USA customs stopped it from coming in. By like 1990, forget it....nothing gets thru.
My 956 body was actually from the Asia market[Guam].
If you want true 'Rothmans' decals, you would have to have your own made some how I guess.
A few guys were doing some Tamiya cars-tobacco stickers, but not any more since Tamiya stopped them?
Sellers are now again getting premium prices for original Tamiya decals online.
I saw a guy selling a decal set for quite a bit of $$$$$, but they sold quick!
If Tamiya does reissue the Rothmans actual car[kit#42], they wont redo the real 1984 decals you can be sure of that!
Either way, let me know.......

Good point there... (seems obvious but) hadn't taken that into consideration yet. :S

Rous2000 - have a look at the topic "F2 58013 causing dazed confusion" for some diff/spur gear making excitement, & also the topic on motor pinion sizes - there's info on there on how to figure out what diameter, pitch & teeth number you'd need for your axle-motor centre dimension. If you want to go this route but there's too much to take in, let me have some fairly accurate measurements (By accurate I mean it really needs to be to 0.1mm, 0.5mm out is too much & makes the difference of will work/won't work) & I'll work it out for you. To do the sums, I'd need axle centre to motor centre, diameter & number of teeth of the motor pinion measurements, & if you know how many teeth the spur's supposed to have, that would be useful. The pics are of the diff I made for my F2. They are a SRB primary gear, modified to accept TL01 metal bevel gears. The driving hubs I just machined up to look neat 'cos I can' but with the power to weight ratio of a 1/12th car I'm sure you'd get away with some plastic-part-adaptation & good epoxy resin
