My home office/museum/library/tool, materials & kit storage/hobby room has become a complex, multi-layered sliding tile puzzle with interlocking dependencies – and those dependencies look like a collapsed Jenga tower rather than a Gannt chart
Almost any time I want to do something, I have to move loose stuff around, then often move the same stuff around to do anything else. Particular annoyances are the “often used tool” drawer which is usually open and gets piled with stuff as a pseudo bench (burying the tools), and the shelves with my small part/fastener organisers – which are already stacked in 7s (and I often want the bottom one), but have also gained a continuous plaque of bottles, tractor models, mugs full of paintbrushes/pens/chopsticks & other associated kipple in front of them, which I have to shuffle about any time I want something. My method of working (having multiple projects on the go, in various stages) doesn’t help, and nor does keeping healthy stocks of materials, or keeping bits that might come in handy in the future, or having multiple interests …The fundamental problem is too much stuff – but there’s not a whole lot I feel I can lose. The one area I can cut down on is books. While I’m still reading more than Champion The Wonder Horse (my “go to” example for little/no interest in literacy This will free up some space for all those mugs & some of the more stackable loose stuff, but already I need to catch up with my filing – for which I need more punched pockets & files TL;DR – hobby room has got unmanageable, attempting to tidy.

I pushed my dad to buy and build it. It is his last rc for the moment. And I know that he loves that. I only ended his job. (My dad is 80 yo) .

Same type of feeling here, maybe in worse, as since the Covid started, I use my hobby room as my work office as well... Since that time, work and hobby project are accumulating in my space... Each time my wife come in my room (a mezzanine where the home printer is), she would say : "maybe it's time to move some boxes?". There is some I could eventually evacuate as the projects are finished, but the fact is I would not know where to put them currently. We have a piece of attic, but it is already full. I need to tidy it first, and both my wife and myself are lacking courage to do so. And even my desk is cluttered with so many tools, work notes, work paperwork, work tools, hobby stuff and so on... And the thing which amuses me a lot is that I do not have any issue to know where is what in this mess... What I'm really asking myself is how much disorganized I can get while still having no issues :-D But, honestly, time will come I will need to tidy this mess... I buy kits to built and ru(i)n them

I can't agree more about a disorganised workspace but also know where everything is and its quite tidy at the moment for me. My wife also says why dont you box some things up and put them in the loft/attic. I have thought about this and brought 2 stand alone shelve units off amazon which I plan to put up in the loft to store stuff on (less on the floor) I can then box up some old IT/computer parts, 20yrs worth of spare cables I keep just in case and put them up the loft on the shelves giving me more space for 3d printing supplies, airbrush supplies and generally more floor/shelf space in my Art/Computer/3d printing room. I will also have to put some of my motorcycle stuff up there as I have that everywhere too. Now I just have to mootivate myself to get up the loft and build the shelve units.. Then I will have to work on the garage space so I have more room to work on bikes and rc stuff,
Regards
Lee
