The biggest problem with the CR-01 as a crawler is the stock tires.  If you replace those, it is actually quite capable.

One of my greatest RC laments is the loss of my CR-01.  I had probably put more money into upgrading that thing than any other model I owned and it was glorious.  I'll never be able to duplicate it with current parts availability.

Today just a strip down of CR 01 centre gearbox.
This is a recent purchase and is in need of a little work. I think it may have spent a fair bit of early life in mud and water.
Most of the bearings are suffering with a lot of corrosion.
Probably why it made a grinding noise on test run.
