Battery of choice – NiHM or LiPo? 12 years 10 months ago #26748

Hi all,

I'm building a 1/10th 27T touring car to race in my local club, and as I am the ONLY Tamiya 'driver' everyone else is running LiPo 1S batteries in their 1/12th Mardave's and Schumacher's.

So I don't get 'left in their dust' is there opportunity to run a LiPo 1S/2S in my new TT-01 chassis, and what ESC would I have to use?

At the moment, I'm set up with the 'Sport Tuned' black motor with a Tamiya TEU-105BK speed controller. Also considering a 2.4GHz receiver (to break away from old school 27mHz).

Any recommendations for a LiPo battery with suited ESC would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

As far as I know Novak is almost the only way to go for 1s esc's ant motors, but their all brushless. I like Turnigy nano tech for lipo batteries from hobby king. 2.4 is the way to go. I have a modified GT3B from overkillrc.com that's 8 channel. Receivers run from $7 to $16, and it has a ton of model memory.

If you run LiPo you need to run either a voltage low-voltage sensing Esc or a LiPo alarm with your current esc.
Personally I prefer to run LiPo in my bashers but I prefer the look of more traditional NiMh ot Nicad in my shelf queens.
The power of Nicad and Nimh drops off slowly as you run the model whereas the LiPo seems to give it;s all until the last. You need a LiPo esc or alarm though becasue you cannot go below 3.3v per cell I think is the limit?
I use Mtroniks Storm series esc's as they are Fantastic :) - As near as dammit to the feel of the original tamiya mechanical unit with the capability to handle Lipo properly. These are Mtronics latest and probably last attempt at the perfection of brushed Lipo controllers

I run 2s Lipo's, these will make any Tamiya model fly.
Due to the risk of fire/flames from Lipo if they get damaged I always get hardcase Lipo's and then reinforce them with a little Fibre-glass sellotape.
I prefer to run Nano-tech Lipo
I run these on my bashers
I remove the plug and fit 'Tamiya' Style plugs. Have never had a problem with power overload or burnout on Tamiya connectors.

Depends on the car... On my Frogs I run a 19T Laydown

On my Lunchbox I prefer a 23t laydown

On my Monster Beetle cars I mostly run 27t stock or 19t stand-up motors.

My son runs a 60T crawler motor in a KBF as he is only 5 and it allows him to control it.

Just a quick edit to add the fact that I also purchased an expensive Lipo charging unit with temp sensor and computer logging etc.. I wasn't going to trust a cheapo charger with Lipo batteries. I also charge them in a fireproof bag. Please make sure you fully understand all of the 'issues' of Lipo before purchasing any.
