Tamiya/Futaba P-80F problems 12 years 8 months ago #27680

Hi folks, wondering if any of you have some ideas.

Got an old Super Hornet that has a Tamiya/Futaba branded P-80F, as far as i'm aware these were intended for use with the adspec transmitters, however i much prefer my good old Attack SR.

It works with an AM27hz crystal set, but forward has to be trimmed right back on the controller in order to come to a stop (no trim and its trying to pull forward constantly), turning works fine, but reverse doesnt entirely work, it tries, but im guessing the power its switching to make the motor go backwards isnt enough because the 14T motor thats fitted to it just jerks in pulses.

At the same time, applying acceleration makes the steering servo twitch, sometimes a little sometimes a lot.

Is this a result of using an attack SR instead of an adspec (i dont have one to hand to test with), or is there something not right with the unit?

Also while im on the topic, does anyone know a decent receiver+esc that will take AM27hz crystals and also run a brushless?

TBH I've got very little interest in CPR units, I always looked at them as an evolutionary dead end that didn't really have a place in 1:10/1:12 size cars ... that said, I did have quick Google & had some thoughts:

1 - I don't think it's an AM/FM issue - if you had that mismatched I don't think it would be working at all ... it could still be a crystal problem though, make sure the one in the TX is TX crystal (IIRC TX/RX XTALs are very slightly different) and/or try a different one to rule out brand or breakage;

2 - Duff TX? AFAIK there shouldn't be an issue with using a different brand, but I'd still try a substitute to rule it out;

3 - From what I could see, the P-80F is rated up to a Technigold motor ... which is 21 turns. I'm amazed you haven't let the magic smoke out already by using a 14T motor, there has to be a strong possibility you've partially fried something :(

4 - Motor stuttering can imply a duff battery, but in this case you can probably dismiss that;

5 - Servo twitchiness implies RF interference, as it happens when you accelerate it could be the motor is inadequately supressed, lubricated, or is just plain clapped out; antenna & motor wire routing could also be playing a part, but the usual fix is to upgrade to M40Mhz or 2.4 Ghz, neither of which is really an option with a CPR unit;

6 - I think the chance of there being a 27mhz/brushless CPR are pretty slim, the technologies are just too many decades apart: it'd be like the stereo in your 1:1 car supporting both bluetooth connectivity and 8-track tape ;)

What car is this for BTW?

I would love my Mazda to have an 8 track :)

Thanks for the help!

1) Yeah, i tried the transmitter and crystal set in another car and it worked fine, i think the ESC is just toast.
2) Nah, definitely works as in 1 :)
3) Thats what i was thinking, but the car came with it all installed as it was, all ive really done is turn it on! (been a long time since i tinkered with RC!)
4) Forward and turning work fine its only backwards thats having the problem, however after thinking about it im inclined to believe the ESC is toasted from the last owner
5) As the turning servos connected to the ESC, im under the impression that the ESC being dead is now the cause of that
6) Yeah i decided to go with a separate ESC and receiver instead so i can keep my trusty Attack SR, not really a big fan of the modern trigger and spare-wheel-stuck-on-side controllers i see a lot of these days.

It's an old Super Hornet!, i bought a new and boxed one but i cant bring myself to build it up so i picked up an old used one out of a thrift store here in japan for $20, been tinkering with that.

Just to experiment with ive picked up a TBLM-01 and a TBLE01 to mess about with, also scores some nice stuff today too! will post pics in the other thread soon.
