Hi all, the wild willy project is moving forward slowly but I've come across a new problem I'm struggling to resolve on my own. For anyone that hasn't seen my previous posts I'm trying to paint my wild willy 2 in retro m38 style, it's proving to be quite a tough project for me, I'm brand new to the hobby and only used an air brush for the first time on this car.
I've fumbled through the majority of the painting now but have run into difficulty in masking the drivers helmet, as you know the helmet should have a band of blue around the bottom, then white, then red on top. Here's the question, how on earth do I mask it? It's proving impossible to get the masking tape in the correct profile (especially around the top red portion) the masking tape just creases and becomes full of folds. Can anyone give me any tips on masking this correctly? I'm guessing there must be a type of masking tape good for going around corners and contours, I'm sure the paper type of masking tape I'm using can't be what you guys are using. Any help or pointers much appreciated as always. Lee |

U have to use several width of tape first use small (which is easier on contour) then wider tape to cover.
Tamiya has a choice of these tapes, but you also should find them in lhs that has airbrush equipment |

Great, I'll get some smaller diameter tape and have another go. I've just checked eBay and see it goes down to 0.5mm, any thoughts on what size I should get? I'm guessing the 0.5mm has to be for tiny modelling, would 2mm, 3mm be closer to what I'm looking for?

I used Tamiya 6mm tape, stuck a length down on a clean cutting mat & razored it in half ... TBH It still wasn't perfect with a bit of bleed & I didn't get the shape quite right, so hid that with black 0.7mm Kyosho Micron line tape to define the edges

Thanks. I've seen a few people use the fine black tape to hide their colour transitions on willy's helmet, I will use that method if need be. My plan, if I can get the masking right, is to airbrush on the colours really thinly in flat paint, my hope is if I blow the paint on kind of dry there won't be much chance of the paint running, then I can lacquer it once dry.
I've just got to get the masking better. If 3mm didn't get it perfect for you I'll go for something a little smaller I think and see how I get on. I'll post some photos, good or bad of the outcome:) |
