Motor advice. 12 years 1 month ago #31329

I'm thinking I should treat some of my runners to new motors instead of the secondhand junk I currently have but I don't have much experience with RC motors. I'd also like to get a little more performance, but don't need ludicrous speed.
As usual I don't want to spend too much money. The Tamiya Sport Tuned seems to be a popular choice but I can't shake the feeling the Tamiya brand probably adds 25% to the price.
I know the Ansmann Clash motors are not well-regarded here. How about the Etronix ones? e.g.

Any other recommendations?
How much performance increase can I expect over a (probably knackered) silver can?

I'd also like to try one of these new-fangled brushless combos. This Turnigy 4000kv 80A combo from Hobbyking seems to be good value.
How would this compare with my brushed motors?

I'm not a brushless expert but I wouldn't go for that particular one - it's a 16T which would indicate a small inner core (not 540). It's probably more suitable for on road.
Sport Tuned are generally rather nice motors, much faster than a silvercan.
Price wise, I would go for something like this :

BZ Tuned at Banzai

They have a large choice of tuned Tamiya motors at about the cost of that Etronix (shipping probably adds $3-4). :)

Edit :

Sport Tuned at Banzai

So I assume smaller core mean less torque (and more revs)?
How can you tell if it has a larger core?

That BZ motor does look nice - a looks are important too.

Oooh and that Sports Tuned is my kinda price!!

Edit: Just ordered 2 of those Sport Tuned motors from Banzai. Hopefully the value of the order will be low enough not to attract too much attention from HMRC

Brushless with 'half' turns are usually 540 inside.
Indeed like you said, one kind is a bit more focused on torque and the other on rpm.

Pretty sure two Sport Tuneds at Banzai price will get through any customs. :)

Good choice :y:

@Edou, are the prices ricing at Banzai? I had in mind that the sport and torque tuned were cheaper.

Cheaper than six quid???
Maybe it's exchange rates. Euro is not doing great at the moment

Still interested in a low-cost brushless setup, so recommendations welcome.

Also, I have couple of Mardaves and Kyoshos that need motors. Putting a Tamiya in them seems a bit wrong :)

I do believe the euro lost a little on the yen but still nothing to complain about. :)
