Hi everyone, I have just broken the Axle Springs on my CW-01 LUNCHBOX, I have read several.blogs where people have modified the chasis to install a Fifth shock absorber, which I'm not comfortable doing. Would it be possible to install a modified clothes peg spring instead? I have not yet tried this out myself, but could it work?
I look forward to some feed back!
Thanks, Eric. M. C.

I take it you didn't take the temporary locating screws out? ;)

Some background to what is supposed to be happening with the suspension might help ... the earliest cars with that gearbox had a simple round pivot point, but the problem with that was that a bump on one wheel would lift both rear wheels off the ground.

Later cars have slotted pivots, so theoretically a bump on one side just lifts that wheel. The problem is, it's easier for the motor to overcome the inertia of the gearbox pivot than it is to turn the wheels & move the car, so the gearbox rotates with a clack the moment any forward power is applied, defeating the point of the slotted pivots by effectively making them solid again.

Tamiya's "solution" was to put springs in the slots, but they are so weak they might as well not be there, but the problem with stronger springs is that by the time they're strong enough to prevent the motor overcoming the primary inertia of the gearbox rotation, they don't allow any upward movement and you're back to square one again.

The "5th shock" works by stopping the rotation of the gearbox, but still allowing semi-independent wheel movement. The spring (rather than a solid control rod) can be useful where a big bump hits both wheels at the same time.

Fill yer boots reinventing the wheel if you want, but remember rolling rigid rear axle suspension is always going to be a bit crap - accept it as part of the Lunchbox's "character" :)

The fifth shock is very easy to do and requires only very small mods to the chassis. I'd say give it a try.

 Kidding :)
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)
