Noob Qstn, Gearbox vs Shaft Drive type 10 years 8 months ago #37049

Can anyone tell me the difference between both the drive types as shown in Screenshot1 ?
And in the screenshot 2,models having the same chassis(TT02), but in the specifications they are given different drive types...but in both the manuals the instructions and parts are same.
So please clarify this, am I missing anything obvious? Thank you..

Not sure what to say about "gearbox" in general but I think they got it wrong on the second screenshot. Both are shafties.

Edit - some cars are direct drive (like Formula chassis) so they're without any gear enclosure. All the above cars have gearboxes of course.

Thanks for your insight, I came to a result that this specification in many models is not matching with the instructions/drawings in manuals, in my opinion this specification is not that reliable. But still there is some confusion remaining that i may be missing some other info....keeping that aside, I think GearBox Drive means this

I am not particularly sure about this....Correct me if I am wrong

Not sure what that is but Tamiyas are usually either belt or shaft driven 4WD.
Little do I know myself about 3-speeds for example though.

I guess any enclosed gearbox qualifies as "gearbox" there, even if some are basically incorrect because their propulsion method should have been mentioned instead. The logic seems that only 2WD cars should get that qualification.
The chassis on the picture mostly looks like one to retro-actively match their mistake.
Haven't seen too many all geared 4WDs myself.

Edit - ah, a GF-01.

That particular chassis says "gearbox" as well. They should have better made some distinction for clarity...
And even more complete would be to mention either FWD or RWD.

Edit - I guess RWD is implied unless mentioned otherwise. :pinch:

First, I would recommend using the TamiyaBase Model DataBase for these questions :-)

The Chassis DataBase includes info on what kind of chassis the models have.

Next: I think TamiyaUSA only got it wrong on The Porsche 58571, as this is a TT-02, like the LaFerrari 58582.

"Gearbox/Closed Gearbox" is used to describe 2WD models type of gearbox, while on 4WD models the Drive type/Drive Line is used to describe what kind of system is uses to split the power between the two gearboxes. ("Dual Belt", "Shaft" and even "Shaft/Belt")

And, I got it wrong on the Blackfoot III, giving it a Shaft and 4WD, it Looks like it should be 2WD Closed Gearbox.
Signature now gets correct formatting if you edit it in your Profile. Use normal BBcode if you want.

Ya thanks...will do some more research to become much more clear ..I too think it should be 2WD Closed Gearbox, Out of curiosity is there any 2WD model having gearbox and having shaft to connect to the differential, if there then what is that then called, simply gearbox driveline or shaft driveline? Or is arrangement/question illogical ?

Seems there's some drift cars around with front motor and shaft RWD...

Haven't seen a Tamiya like that though.
But also haven't been paying attention for a while...
