I've seen people clear coat over waterslide decals, but make sure to test if the clear reacts with the decals first.

I've used Humbrol "DecalFix" on waterslide transfers - the instructions say to soak the transfer in the fluid and apply some to the model (i.e. use in place of water) but in my experience that's far too much & will destroy the transfer.
Instead, use water to apply the transfer & let dry as normal, then if there are any parts of the transfer not conforming to details underneath (panel lines, hinges, rivet details etc etc), then apply a tiny bit of DecalFix to that area only. That part of the transfer will wrinkle/swell up, but once it dries overnight, it will shrink back around the details Re clearcoating - what Lars said, but I'd also suggest airbrushing rather than an aerosol - X-22 Clear, X-35 Semi Gloss Clear or XF-86 Flat Clear depending on the finish you want. Obviously use the lowest pressure & thinner dilution rate you can get away with - it should behave (mostly) like X & XF paints |
