Question about FF01 motor conversion 9 years 6 months ago #43262

Ok, I have finally got my son's FF01 going again. It took a new gearbox cover (thanks Stingray), a new battery, and a new radio. It still has the original speed controller (mechanical) but it only has wide open or stop in both forward & reverse. It has no slow or medium speed.

I have a Traxxas Rustler VXL that I am getting ready to upgrade the ESC & motor. Will the 2-pole brushless motor and speed control from the Rustler work on the FF01? If not, what esc would you recommend for the FF01 with the stock motor?

Quicrun 1060 ESC works nice on almost anything and it's waterproof.

Assuming I found the right specs for the Traxxas combo (540 size motor, 10.5T/3500kV - so nominally 25,200rpm on 6N NiMH) it should fit & is not _totally_ excessive for an FF01 ... just remember to glue the tyres on, set the rear up with the "technical" track orientation (because it's going to understeer badly with added power), don't expect any traction with a heavy throttle thumb, and that you're driving old plastic & the faster you're going when you crash, the more likely to break something ...

Thinking about it, that sort of hooliganism didn't bother me at all a few years ago, but replacement FF01 parts have got rare/expensive in the meantime, so maybe it is too much ...

Makes very much sense. I'm leaning on just replacing the esc and leaving the stock motor.
Thanks.

I just checked this and it sounds like a good choice. Now, I am using the receiver that came with the original Futaba Magnum Jr radio. This receiver has a different plug pin arrangement, are there adaptors to make the futaba receiver compatible with the plug on this esc?

:) Only vintage sanwa have a different pinout with the +on the exterior. Futaba is now the standard. You can modify your connector or your receiver case to can plug. And like said waterbok and Jonny, the classic 540 is enough. You can put a 25 teeth motor pinion. And if you want, I should have a msc nib. If you prefer an ESC, the waterbok one is enough for the 540 silvercan. On my clio I used a 13x3 trinity motor. Too powered. I re used the classic 540 with a 25 teeth pinion. And I largely prefer.

MSC .... is that what came with the car originally? Would that be part number 9405832? There is also what appears to be a resistor that the speed control is connected to, could that be bad? Are they still available?

:) yes it is. Generally, the «sugar style» resistor is in fault when the variator is out.
