Question for the Tamiya Sand Scorcher re re 9 years 1 week ago #46376

Hello everybody,
I am new here, well 40 years old and would like to start again with the model building.

For a long time it has deigned. I used to have a Tamiya Falcon as a child, then later a Bruiser.

Now I want to build a Tamiya Sand Scorcher together with my son. The model is just great.

However, I would like to make some modifications and hope for support. On the one hand, I would like to install an aluminum base plate. Does anyone know the one from radshaperc.com? Here there is also a longer version, which also goes over the transmission and protects from below. Are they good?

Then I would like to order some at rcchannel. Is the shop generally recommendable? Negatives I could not really find.

I'm particularly interested in the "Metal Kit" and also the "Rear Flat Oil Damper Kit". Especially the mono damper from the rear flat oil damper kit I think somehow chic.

Rides the parts someone and has installed them?

Is it worth it and increases driving comfort? rcchannel has also other dampers for the front. I would probably also change. Or can anyone recommend other dampers for the Sand Scorcher?

And are the aluminum rims of rcchannel a good thing? Here I thought about buying the set for the Buggy Champ. I also find the great on the sand scorcher.

Are there parts or things on the Sand Scorcher they make also sense to change? An alimium roll guard is also planed and a new front bumper too.

I am very grateful for any help.

Sorry for my not perfect English and for the lot of questions.

Welcome on Tamiyabase. I had a radshap chassis for the sand scorcher I sold or trade with a member. It looks to be a good chassis. thick and nice.
A optioned SRB chassis is always pretty.

I haven't seen a Radshape SRB chassis in the flesh, but the parts I have had from them are very good quality and fit ... I believe that building 1:1 car chassis (including the Morgan Aero 8 IIRC) was their core business before branching out into RC.

I've had parts from RCChannel (the "boxart" front bumper for the Scorcher, wheels & various brackets) & have had no worries about robustness with them, though they're not quite up there with Tamiya quality and fit.

I would question the utility of upgrading the chassis too much - it's still a (nearly) 40 year old design, at best you're going to have a Super Champ ;) If you're determined to go that route though, you might also want to look for a differential gear set.

The natural habitat of one of these cars is gentle running on lightly undulating, hard packed ground with a loose layer on top so you can slide it around a bit without grip roll, anything much more challenging than that & it's going to damage the paint, detail parts & possibly chassis parts too. I'm not trying to put you off, the Sand Scorcher is an excellent car for building, painting and admiring - but you might want to consider something a bit more modern as well if you're going to drive it a lot :)

Thanks a lot.

I want to drive the car and it is not really important, that it is "scale". It should run an drive smooth an nice. This is the thing for me. The update for a differential gear set is planed.

Did anyone have an email from Paul (rcchannel)? I could not use the contact via his homepage. I get an error. Same when I want to create an account, and via ebay he did not reply.

Thanks.

Works for me,
Chassis plate, bumper and gear protector are Radshape

RCChannel

Got Alloy wheel covers not complete ally rims

It might work out cheaper if you dont buy the komplete kit if you plan to do so much upgrading. But buy all in bits and pieces.
Or get a used one

As JR says, the Sand Scorcher is great to build but is never going to be able to keep up with modern cars on a track. They are also pretty fragile.
If you want to run it, I would suggest getting a spare polycarbonate bodyshell for running like this one from Kamtec www.kamtec.co.u...ucts/K0034
Then you will not cry so much when you crash it!

I think RC Channel and Radshape are both pretty well respected companies in the RC community. You should be OK buying from either of them.

You might also consider buying a "restoration project" (AKA pile of junk) from eBay. I personally like the challenge of resurrecting basket cases and finding interesting bits in random job lots. Beware, though that you can end up addicted! In sourcing spare parts to restore my original 1970s Sand Scorcher, I ended up with enough bits to build three more! (and a small bookcase of other "restoration projects")
