Sand Scorcher steering servo position 15 years 2 months ago #2358

I have just become a proud owner of a vintage SS that is in need of full restoration but is in incredibly good condition and is very complete, both mirrors, door handles, Licence plates, VW badge, it's all there! Now my question is this - The steering servo is mounted up in the receiver box with the horn hanging out the front. It appears to be very effective at turning the wheels this way but I didnt think it was correct until I saw another on ebay that is exactly the same. Was this an early way of doing things or is it just what was done if the servo saver fell apart or something? Dont know wether to restore it the way it is or get another servo saver setup. Has anyone seen this before?

It's an old skool mod to make the steering more direct & therefore improve it by taking out some of the slack. As an aside, another popular early mod was to shorten the damper shafts, making the car lower & removing the negative camber on the rear wheels.

Going back to stock would mean getting hold of replacement original parts, including the reciever box, so I guess it depends on your idea of "originality" and how far you want to go in sticking to it - make it "original" by buying (probably re-re) parts to make it stock again, or stick with the "original" modded steering ...

I have to admit my judgement is coloured by already having a pretty much stock & box art Scorcher - I'd stick with the mod myself, but if it was my 1st Scorcher, I'd have wanted to make it 100% stock.

Thanks Jonny Retro, yeah hard decision, use Re issue parts to make it original? Or original parts to have it modified? Ideally, I would like to find an original servo saver and radio box but they dont seem to be just lying around the place these days. Will probably use a reissue servo saver and plastic mech box and keep an eye out for original parts to eventually replace them with. Cheers mate
