grasshopper wheel adaptors 15 years 4 weeks ago #3435

i got my new blingy wheels which have the 12mm hex fittings.i bought some hex adaptors to fit the rear wheels and they bolt right on, no trouble.
the problem is the front wheels, which also have the hex mounts.the adaptors for the rear wheels fit on the stubshafts but then you cant get a nut on the wheel, plus there is no bearings in them.
soooo......i have come up with a cunning plan.bought some 12mm brass hex bar, gonna drill a 5mm hole through the middle to fit on the stub shaft, then cut it just the right length to fit the stub shaft with enough play to allow the wheel to spin freely when the nut is tightened.
being brass, and with a good blob of grease it should behave like a bearing, and the brass would wear quicker than the shaft. so plenty of lube before each outing will help, and when they do wear, just replace them.
i bought a 300mm long hex bar so i should get quite a few adaptors made from that!

Hey... I must have misread the eBay add somehow. Looked like they were for a RWD buggy.
Sounds like a good plan though...

thats what they said, and they said it fits a grasshopper with wheel adaptors. understandable for the rear, but not the front?

right, so the 12mm brass hex bar FINALLY turned up today, after a minor discrepency with the ebay seller!
i have crudely made a spacer with my limited tool selection, ( a drill, hacksaw and a file) and the front wheel bolts right on lovely now, all but being a bit wobbly due to my slightly off centre drilling but a mate has a lathe and he is going to make them properly for me.
the spacers are 7mm wide so i should get a few from it.
i am also thinking of making some rear wheel spacers with the slot in to locate on the drive shaft pin.
if anyone is interested in any of these spacers please just ask :)

Nice going! B)

Have to say I am a bit annoyed (and slightly embarrassed) by the ad for the wheel set though.
Wondering if they're purposely being vague there...
Luckily they sent them to somebody with customizing skills! ;)

maybe they didnt actually know what they were selling? probably saw that you could get hex adaptors for the rear and assumed they would fit the font too

That might just be the case - I've had the wrong parts sent to me by 'specialists' before.
With the specs mentioned in the ad, I would have ordered them for my own Hopper too... :S

Hope you get them running smoothly soon! :cheer:

Btw - the chassis mounts are on their way...
