Just a check - you've powered everything on, set full throttle on the transmitter, then whilst holding full throttle, turned the transmitter off. The motor stops (Meaning failsafe is working) but sometimes starts up again at full throttle? If so, that really sounds to me like a dodgy FET (Or something else in the ESC) OR the reciever is picking up a valid signal from another transmitter somewhere. What radio is it (27am, 40fm, 2.4GHz etc?). Pending what other people think about the possibility of steering servos upsetting Rx output (Or something else), also try swapping the various bits (Rx, servo, ESC, transmitter, crystals) for known good ones (1 part at a time) to see if the fault goes away. Oh & when you say you can't steer, does the steering stop in one position or does it jitter about?

2.4GHz suggests it won't be picking up from somewhere else, which sort of leaves a FET problem, but try swapping the other bits too, just to be sure. I'm assuming it's just started doing it, or can you think of anything that's changed since it was last working ok?

well done! Bit of an odd one that, I wonder why the ESC was seeing a valid command from the Rx (Anything other than 'normal' should make the failsafe kick in). I hope this doesn't mean the HK radios are a bit iffy cos I've just put one in my 1/5th scale car...

my fail safe kiks in after a couple of seconds and hobbyking radios are really good for the price.
i think my one had a bit of moisture in it because i drive through puddles at full speed.

Ah... take the Rx apart (If it'll come to bits easily) & gently dry it all out with a hairdryer (Or leave it open for a few days) - they usually come back to life after being dried. You might need to do the same with the steering servo too as most don't have seals on their output shaft (Some do, eg Acoms Techniplus 3). Yep, I agree, the HK set I've got seems to be good for the money, but it's the only one I've ever owned so I keep an eye out for people saying they have issues. Have you tried the car on short/office carpet yet? - they drift really well!
