I've been lookiing a Lars' 959 restoration thread, and comparing his "style" with mine...
His seems to be quite logical & ordered, something like: 1- buy car 2- dismantle car 3- buy bits 4- rebuild by the book, cleaning bits as you go Mine on the other hand seems to be a little more random: 1- buy car 2- regret buying car (paid too much, should've waited until end of month, etc) 3- put car on shelf to make it more mine 4- give it a once over & buy some bits 5- dismantle a bit 6- lose interest & put the car back on the shelf for several months - although this does have an advantage - when asked "Is that _another_ new car?", I can honestly say "No, I've had it _ages_" 7- buy paint 8- buy shiny new fasteners 9- get distracted on doing the wheels to completion 10- dismantle a bit more & find more bits need replacing - buy those 11- realise I need an undercoat for the paint - buy that 12- strip, rub down & prime body 13- finish dismantling & realise there are still more bits that need replacing, & buy those 14- clean some bits 15- get completely distracted by buying another project, stripping it & buying bits 16- clean some more bits 17- get distracted doing something else while waiting for "spraying weather" 18- finish painting 19- completely assemble body 20- lay out bits a little in the style of Tamiya exploded diagrams 21- Assemble in the order I feel like, referring to the manual only if something is not clear 22- Put finished car when I can admire it for a bit 23- run car carefully around garden - usually rolling it within 30 seconds & damage/break something 24- lock car into hermetically sealed display case Overall, mine must be better How do you build yours? |

My process is a combination Larbut and Johnny Retros', 1- buy car 2- regret buying car (paid too much, should've waited until end of month, etc) 3- put car on shelf to make it more mine 4- dismantle car 5- get completely distracted by buying another project, stripping it & buying bits 6- clean some bits 7- buy some bits 8- go back to side project 9- realise I need to run it, so slap it together with parts taken from other cars 10- buy another project, which sits on the shelf waiting it's turn 11- wait for chance to spray shell (put more gaffa tape on old shell to hold it together) 12- buy another car, pour money into that 13- face questions from wife about why I need so many cars 14- stare at the multiple containers of car parts, and promise myself I'll finish it tonight, then get side-tracked by RC forums 15- go back to step 1 |

Actually, my process has five steps:

Cool thread!
My process is not that straight forward either. Tends to go mostly like Johny Retro and Falcon#5's approach except for the part where I have to answer to my wife. But it probably strays even more : 1 - Buy a car (Manta Ray) for a really good price and anticipating a simple rebuild 2 - Research research research 3 - Buy far too many hop ups and turn it into a Monster Truck Humvee! 4 - Get another incomplete chassis and more spare parts 5 - Totally rebuild the Humvee again with these parts so I can also build the Manta Ray 6 - Get distracted with the Group C chassis and buy a C11 - because of Lars! 7 - Thinking that one is looking too good to drive and wanting another Merc 8 - Planning to rebuild two C11s - a shelfer and a runner 9 - Totally blowing the budget on all of this so all of them (except the Humvee) become slowbuilds Note - this process cannot be done in a loop so there's no going back to #1! Start selling some stuff again first... And if Lars had any other approach then that could lead to total chaos - having 95 of the first 100 models! |
