BigWig motor choices 12 years 10 months ago #26684

I have a BigWig standing here, not really mine but I have stored it for one of my mates for several years now.
(Actually on my less liked on the first 100 Tamiya list, I just don't like the look of it)

But anyway, what motor does fit the old girl?
I'm thinking of fitting a cheap brushless system in it to make it up to date.

Thechnigold motor still in kit, but I will take it out and save it for the future.

The orginal MSC is long gone so it needs a ESC in any case...

The Technigold by modern standards is pretty unexciting, it's a 21 turn rebuildable motor with adjustable advance, if you want to stick with a brushed motor then any cheap, modern 21T motor (with the exception of the early Ansmann "Clash" motors) should at least match the performance.

I have an (old style, now) EZRUN 13T in a Bigwig, performance on 8.4v NIMH is better than the stock Technigold, I'm not sure I would have wanted to go to the 9T combo, and I'm pretty sure the 5.5T would have shredded the driveline. Motor wise, anything 540 sized will fit (so make sure you don't get one of the "1/18" size combos).

The ESC is another matter, I had to cut the subchassis, (repro) body & driver to make headroom for the fan ... in my defence I'd point out that subchassis were widely & cheaply available at the time & I always intended to get another one ... then they were all gone

In hindsight, I can say a better option now would be to take advantage of the 7-cell wide chassis tub & switch to a small 2S Lipo, & fit the MSC there :)
