Hi,

It has been a few years since I was last on the forum - health issues and losing my RC collection - being the main contributing factors that abruptly derailed my enthusiasm for the hobby.

Despite those setbacks there has always been a lingering passion for RC cars, with particular emphasis on Tamiya. But the thought of having to rebuild a collection instantly antagonised a red mist of anger when I think back to what I lost, and any thought of returning to the hobby was quickly removed from my mind.

Until now.

I've finally decided to dive back in and put the past behind me. I'd like to restart my collection with a vintage Rough Rider as that model in particular holds so many wonderful memories. But I'm also considering a Blackfoot or Thunder shot. I'll keep my eyes peeled and see what materialises.

Best wishes.
Sam.

P.S. Can anyone please advise me if it's possible to change my password?.

Thank you.

Hi Larbut,

Thank you for welcoming me back to the forum and also instruction on changing my password. It's very much appreciated.

I'll be sure to keep the forum updated on my purchases, although I'm busily trying to research the manufacturing differences between vintage and re-release models to minimise the chances of buying a Frankenstein car. I've been the victim of that a couple of times in the past.

Thank you once again.

Sam.

Hi Stingray,

Thank you. It's nice to be back. I'm located in London, UK. I very much apprecte the offer but funds are a little limited approaching the festive season and I'm currently negotiating a deal for a vintage Rough Rider. Well, it's a box full of old greasy parts that is being advertised as a restoration project.

Best wishes.

Thank you Stingray, I hope so too.
From my perspective, restoration projects are the heartbeat of the hobby. There's nothing quite like receiving a box of old yellowing and greasy vintage parts that conceal a theatre of memories - these old models are scaled down time capsules that - for me at least - represent better times.

It's a very calming process that focuses the mind too: Sitting at a work bench unpacking a box of old tarnished parts - preferably with some good 80's music playing in the background - excited by the anticipation of cleaning & restoring a jigsaw of vintage scraps back to a beautiful example of 80's RC.

Unfortunately due to health problems, my memory isn't that good anymore and I've forgotten so many of the restoration tips and tricks that I learned from the kind and knowledgeable people here, but also the valuable practical experience of trial and error. So that's certainly affected my confidence and one of the other reasons I avoided a return to the hobby for so long. It's horrible when can't do or remember something that used to be second nature. But I'm hoping this new chapter will help restore some of those memories.

Stingray, I'm sure many more vintage Tamiya's will be restored to their former glory at your hands.

Very welcome back Sam!

Jonny Retro on here has made many great articles on how to restore things. You`ll find those in the article section.

Same as you, I struggle to remember at times. For me it`s the ME illness to blame which has worsen over the 15 years I having this illness.
But I try to enjoy this hobby when I can. My case is fatigue, lack of energy and muscle pain and activity make it worse.

So sorry to hear you lost your collection. Hope you can make one slowly but surely.

I`m located in Norway, but we have several members in UK so help is not far away if you need something.

Cheers, Richard
