Airplane motor with RC car esc? 2 years 4 months ago #78632

Can you use an airplane motor with an rc car esc?
I've got a 6400KV Motor and I want to make a car with it. As I understand, the main difference between brushless airplane motors and brushless car motors is that they're more open to the elements. But if that's not an issue,
and the current and cell counts match up, then it should work right?
I'm specifically looking at getting a Brushless ESC to run it.

Hey, There are a few differences between Plane and car motors. first would be the size, 1/10 cars run a 540 size. second would be cars run sensor motors for smooth power delivery, not something required with planes as the prop doesn't really encounter resistance like cars. third but this is a guess I would expect torque to be an issue for the plane motor?
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

The biggest difference is that airplane ESCs only run in one direction (no reverse) and don't have a braking function. There's nothing different in principle about the motor itself.  If you want to connect an airplane motor to a car ESC it should work fine assuming it has the torque and rpm you need for your application.

That motor could be used as a speed run motor.
Beecuse of the massive 73mm bolt patteren it needs a custom motor mount as a normal 540 motor is 25mm between bolt holes.
Next is the low KV rating, it needs the 10s lipo as it is rated for to move with speed and the vehicle itself will need a very tall gearing.

To compare, a crawler motor has usually 1800-2200kv on 3s and they move slow ish.

So the motor is not really suitable to run in a normal vehicle...
