Restorating a TA03R-S chassis - Question regarding damper size 10 months 4 weeks ago #81472

Hello everyone!

I hope this is the right subforum for my question.

First I want to introduce myself: I am David from Germany. In my early teen years I had two RC cars, but I think I started too late. Soon afterward there were other things which distracted me before I could make the RC thing into a real hobby.

Now, more than two decades later, I found an old incomplete TA03R-S chassis in the attic of my parents house. It comes from a Tamiya PIAA Porsche 911 (58215). Here is the  link to the model page .

Most parts are there, not too much broken. I've to replace the belt and upgrade the electronics a bit, but it looks promising. I even found a body which fits the chassis.

The parts which bothers me the most are the missing dampers.

According to the model page the damper type is 50519 C.V.A. MINI SHOCK II.

According to the manual, the front dampers need one V4 spacer (which seems to be the slimmest one), and the rear dampers need a combination of the larger V6 and V7 spacers.

Instead of the Tamiya original, I would like to use those aluminium dampers which are available all over the internet. I like the look and they seem to be a lot cheaper.

I also would like a little more ground clearance than with the original dampers.

Can someone point me to the right size?

I measured the distance between the connection points and thought about 55-60 mm eye to eye for the front and 60-65 mm eye to eye for the rear dampers. Is that the way?

I appreciate all help. Also I want to thank you all for this community, which provides so much information.

Greetings
David

The 50519 dampers can be built in length of 55,64,67 and 70mm so the 55 and 65mm guess is right on the money.
Since the rear is built at 64mm it has a bit more stroke than the front ones.

If you buy aftermarket dampers I would have gone for 65mm dampers, and use spacers to adjust length.
You can use spacer under the piston at the inside to make the damper shorter, and outside to limit stroke if you want.

Just remember some of the aftermarket ones leak bad, even with good seals.

Yeah Racing is one of the good ones.

Thank you very much for your reply!

I understand the quality issue, but the ones from Tamiya are like $60 for 4 dampers.

To avoid dampers with unknown quality and maybe leaks, I am now checking other manufacturers like Carson (they have a 62 mm set).

To see if they fit I printed a dummy with 62 mm length eye to eye and it seems the rear dampers could be a little bit longer or the front shorter. I ordered them anyway and will try them out.

Thank you very much again.

I have bought literally dozens of ones called "Option No 7" written on the side and they are really nice aluminum shocks, don't leak and the quality is second to none and very cheap.

If you need more info, I can help. Good luck!

TBH, I never had aftermarket shocks so smooth than the basic plastic tamiya shocks or the pink aloy tamiya shocks. (I only had a pair of these one firstly on my clio after a bad crash with a 13x3 motor and after mounted on my fiat m02) . But yeah racing are fine. I have a set on my m05 or mf01x.

Hi Flo!!

Totally agree with you on those pink Tamiya ones, problem is everyone thinks they have the last  pair and price them somewhere over the Moon! LOL!!!

Oh yes.!!! They are crazy. I found some years ago a set of tamiya aloy grey shocks for my cc01.  They were the last at a descent price.... and plastic ones work well.

The "Option No 7" dampers sound nice. Where did you buy those? I'm still waiting for the Carson ones, but maybe I need another set with different length soon.

I think I remember that the original Tamiya dampers were quite good. The problem is, that they are really expensive now and I am not sure yet, that every other part of the car still works. Was thinking about buying a second used chassis, as a Ersatzteilspender (replacement part source) but they seem to be expensive too.

I ordered the electronics and the dampers. When everything has arrived, I will dismantle the half build car and start from scratch, to make sure everything is greased / oiled like it should.
