I know there are probably 500 Clod threads but I need some help. I have an original Clod from the 80's and I have been doing some slight mods on it. I want to change over to an ESC but I do not know any thing about them. I am running the 7.2v battery but I have 15 turn brushed motors. Can any one help me?

Welcome on board :y:

As I'm sure you know, motors are rated in "turns", the lower the number the faster the motor - and the more current it draws

ESCs are rated in terms of the fastest motor they can handle, e.g. a 20T ESC can handle motors down to 20T - e.g. a 20, 21, 23, 27 & up turn motor will be fine, a 19, 17 or lower turn motor would cause the ESC to fail, or at least shut down for a while due to overheating.

With twin motor trucks, there's an added complication - two motors draw twice as much current. To work out what ESC you need, divided the number of turns of one of the motors by two - e.g. if you had the two stock 27T silvercan motors, you'd divide by two and look for a 13.5T or better rated ESC (in practice it would probably be a 12T ESC). For your two 15T motors, you'd be need to look for a 7.5T rated ESC - in practice you'd need to look for a "No limit" ESC.

That's assuming you want to keep the power/economy switch - which requires a single ESC to run it, the switch takes care of whether the motors run in parallel or series. If you can do without the switch functioning (and effectively run the truck in permanent power/parallel mode), there is another option - two ESCs, one per motor, and split the connection from the radio reciever via a servo "Y" lead. This may well be cheaper - I would expect two 15T rated ESCs to be cheaper than one "no limit" unit.

I'll hold off making suggstions until you've thought about what direction you want to go in ... TBH i'm not a big fan of uprated motors on that chassis, IMO they just make more noise & fall over a lot more - sure, they're more spectacular, but they don't really go that much faster overall.

I don't have the stock motors, it had Black Magic motors and I had no idea what turn they were. The 15 turn motors do make the truck faster and it still climbs with no problem. I wanted it faster because my friends have Nitro trucks and it is fun to screw with them.
If I could fix the mechanical speed control I would keep it. I am trying to find one I can get the part from to fix mine.

Ok, update on the clod mess. I found an old Super Rooster and put it in, what a change!
