While working in my local hobby shop I picked up an M38 from a customer who just wanted to get rid of it for $25.00. I have begun the restoration and I have a few questions.
Is the spare tire the same between the WW2 and WW1? I am also missing the radiator. I see what looks like it on one of the WW2 parts tree, is this the same? I also need one of the roll bar clips and screw nut that mount the rear bar to the top of the center bar. Does anyone know where I can find this small part, or maybe someone would have a spare I could purchase. |

Hi Pantherfan!
Nice Find! and a really nice price The WW2 radiator is not the same as the WW1 (as JR's article describe). I'll have a look at home if I have one spare. The roll bar on the WW2 is also similar to the WW1. If I recall correctly, I have one of those in spare. I'll have a look at home and get back to you. Thanks larbut. I also have a well used WW2 I purchased when it first came out I am cleaning up and making look nice again. I am taking a break from racing right now so I figured I would get a few of the vintage cars I have fixed up and with the few parts the WW1 need I figured I would start there. I have a new Willy and everything other than the spare tire and the radiator. I am getting a set of reproduction decals from someone in the UK for all the restos.
I will be here to ask for help on a few, this one and the super champ will be mainly shelf queens. |

Welcome on board, 25$ was a bit of a steal
Re the radiator inner part, that's not an angle I'd previously considered, but yes, the M38 SWB & LWB "C" parts sprue is the same as the WW2 "H" parts (part # 0005749) & the rad. is marked as "not used" in the WW2 manual. The roll bar sprue (WW2 "K", # 0115255) did change from the M38s, but only with the addition of two screw points on the one right behind the windscreen, the rest of the parts are the same. Spare wheel is unchanged (it's on the J parts, 0005750). If you're missing the driver arms, head lights & winch hook, they're all on the L parts, 0115256. That's a nice looking Super Champ in the background BTW |

Thanks. I have the winch, driver and a roll bar for my WW2 on hand. I need the small clap that attaches the rear support arms to the roll bar by the spot lights. As I am sure you know the M38 uses a machine screw and nut, while the WW2 uses a self tapping screw. I would like to find the correct part and screws. I am really trying to keep this one as correct as I can.
Thanks for the compliment on the super champ. I wish it was in as nice condition as the M38. It is missing one of each of the spot lights and the body is broken by the rear roll bar and the upper deck has a crack or two. It at least has period correct radio gear, but no transmitter. I am sure I will have something that should work. I will be posting pics and asking for lots of help with it. I haven't seen one if those up close since I threw my old chassis away in the 90s, before I learned about the availability of parts on eBay. Now I just can't resist the old cars. I have a blackfoot, an origional frog, 2 monster beetles, one in pretty poor condition, 2 lunch boxes I still drive so they will be restored with modern parts and I will keep driving them. I also have a wild dagger runner, dirt thrasher, and one of the Baja s10s. I also have a 're 're sand scorcher, chrome brat, an in box still nova Fox, farm king, Willy vw van, and a Willy land cruiser. I almost forgot about the 2 m01 mini coopers with the chrome bumpers.
