how can I de-paint a lexan body? 10 years 2 months ago #40259

I want to strip the wrong paint on a top force lexan body (A white top force, yuck) any way to do it while saving the decals? doesn't sound that hard, paint is in the inside while decals are outside... but want to be sure

You should give it a try with brake fluid using a brush.
For a faster reaction you could place the brake fluid areas on direct sunlight.

Be aware that on one of my previous restoration, the lexan became a bit whitened...

Maybe other members have made other experiences

You can use grit papers. You can grit without pressure by dremeling but this method has some risks.
Maybe, dot4 with a pencil but be carefull to not put the liquid outside. And it works better under sunlight.

I've also used brake fluid on many restorations, DOT4, if I recall correctly. (don't know if DOT4 actually makes a difference)
But, I've also had a few shells turn white after the treatment, so be careful.
I think the age of the shell and for how you leave it in contact with brake fluid decide whether it goes bad or not.

;) The DOT4 is the standard brake fluid. The cheaper and the more commonly findable.
I don't know if that work, but I know that the citroen green blood (LHM) is corrosive. I worked on old xantia and BX wich had the LHM tanks attacked by the liquid. That could be nice to try.

The shell will be fogged /white after removing the paint but that's because of the paints reaction to the lexan. After repaint it should look fine again.

That is not the kind of fogging I got. This was some reaction that fogged it "inside" the plastic.
Either way its a problem on window areas.

To be honest cant be done successfully...You will have to buy a new body if you want it to look good.

I had removed paint on lexan by gritting with a teeth grater. The paint had some flakes but sticked on 98% of the body. If you order a new body (like TBG one) You can try with a dremel and griting foam or sand paper on it.

I ordered several decals sheets to MCI and they are good quality ( except wing side ones for a dirt thrasher which were inverted)
