Rubber seal / metal bearing fitment 8 months 1 day ago #81855

With bearing fitment in hubs do members fit the rubber seal side to the plastic and metal side outwards to the air or vice versa?Same question for gearbox rubber against the plastic?Thank you in advance.

The rubber seal is there to prevent moisture or contaminants from getting into the bearing, so that would generally point outward.  Most bearings have the same type of seal on both sides, but the downside to rubber seals is that they introduce more friction or drag into the bearing.  Having a metal side makes it that tiny bit more efficient and should face inward toward the protected side.

Thanks. Which way round is best for a gearbox?

I saw in competition some guys who removed rubber seals to have less friction but they had to clean them after the competition.  For the gearbox full metal bearings are enough. TBH I never saw any difference between rubber and metal seals.

I usually buy bearing kits. I tend to pick the rubber ones as I might run mine in wet conditions like snow.

If I pick them one buy one I use rubber for wheels and transmission output. Inside transmission metall ones.
When running in wet and sandy conditions, sand tends to get inside metal ones. They will then feel gritty. Rubber seems to get less of this.

Just remember to dry off your vehicle completly if you run in snow or rain before storage..
Unless you run stainless bearings, they will rust if you let them be wet.
My CC01 which was my trail rig many years ago actually had locket up bearings caused by them being wet.
Had driven 1 hour to do a snow trail ride and it would not go at all. 5000mAh battery was empty after 10 meter.
Back home I opened it up and all bearings was rusted solid ish.
New set of bearings fixed it no problem.

Now that Rcbearings,co.uk don`t ship outside UK anymore, I tend to go for Yeah Racing bearing kits. The new ones also comes with a bottle of bearing oil.

I bought a lot of bearings from wish when I restored oldies. Unsure you'll keep them 10 years but they do the job .
