58089 Tamiya Bullhead rebuild 15 years 1 month ago #2452

After installing radio gear into the Bullhead over the weekend, I noticed it struggled to drive straight. I noticed a bit of play on the steering arms. At this point I decided to tear it apart and rebuilt it.

I had to repair the mechanical speed control, because the contact plate was worn, and a small piece of wire was soldered on to make it work:

And of course, just general dirt:

The MSC is supposed to have that loop of wire on it, I'm not sure what'll happen without it, my guess is something will overheat ...

Are you sure about sticking with the MSC? As well as the increased fire risk, strong possibility of the truck running out of control, and the lack of fine speed control, the MSC just seems to waste a lot of battery power - I switched to ESCs & just about doubled my run time ... put it this way, now I get "Power" speed with "Economy" run times :)

If you do want to go down the ESC route, you have two options - first is to get a single ESC capable of running both - it doesn't have to be a dual motor ESC, you can go the cheaper route & get a single motor ESC & just put on 2-way bullet connectors, as long as the ESC is up to the job, i.e. two 27 turn silvercan motors = 27 divided by two = 13.5 turn ESC or better, realistically a 12T ESC is more likely ...

The second option is a pair of cheaper ESC (like the Tamiya TEU101BK (or 104) ESCs ;) ) one per motor, you just need a y-lead so both can connect to the RX.

I was considering both options, which do you think is the best? 1 ESC with 2 motors, or 2 ESC 2 motors?

The Tamiya TEU101BK is rated at 60A. A standard johnson motor doesn't draw more than 12A. Won't that work?

1 ESC is a lot tidier, but two can be cheaper, especially the Tamiya kit ESCs if you have them lying around ...

I'm actually in the process of testing the single ESC method with the power/economy swithc in the circut. I like to keep the kit as original as possible, and that switch was quite unique to the Clod axle kits.

I'll keep you posted on the results...
