Super shot re re.. Heating issues 10 years 9 months ago #36365

Hi guys,

I'm a major noob so go easy on me. I'm running a brushless 9t ezrun with esc.. (refer to pic), in a super shot. I know it's a bad idea, plastic gears etc but it's a re re.. and I'm running a Nimh 4700mah 7.2 v battery.. So no lipo.. Anyway for whatever reason the car seams to always stop when running long distances. I have to turn it off then in again. The motor is too hot to touch and a strong smell of cooked silicon is coming from the esc.. I pushed the capacitors away from the esc, figured it might be that, but still no good. In fact I had the capacitors attached to the outside of the body of the car to avoid contact with the esc all together.. Whilst this helped a bit the outcome was still the same.. I'm not sure why the esc and motor keep heating up.. I have the same esc and motor combo on my re re fox and no issues. The wires from the esc to the motor haven't been extended at all. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Since you have the same setup in your fox, Try using the esc from the fox in the SS and the SS esc in the fox. Hopefully this will help you determine which part is causing the issue, The esc or the motor :y:

Thanks also for the tip

Sometimes it's just unfortunate that a component isn't 100% Let us know what you find :)

Gearing is my first thought - if you're not already using a 13T pinion in the Super Shot then TBH you've gone past the motor limit for an old chassis design :( I'd have thought a 13.5T brushless (less revs but more torque) would have been a better match.

The 2WD Fox has a lot less drag, so I'd expect less overheating there assuming everything else was equal.

I'm with Jonny, gearing was my first thought.
Try changing to a smaller pinion.

I don't know very well the brushless technology but like Jonny and Lars, for me the problem comes from your motor pinion wich is too big. the motor and esc jump in heat and the heat protection cut off to avoid firing. I had a common matter on my on road ta02 rs with the bigger pinion on a 11x2 motor. I burnt the motor.

Thank you Jonny Retro, larbut, and Stingray-63.

I was a bit suspicious as to whether the motor would be the culprit. Only reason I say this is because my re re fox and frog has the standard rs540 while the super shot has a sport tuned rs540. Obviously the super shot motor must be designed for more torque given the 4wd transmission. I honestly can't remember if i used the 15T or 13T pinion. Possibly 15T, so I'll have to look into that.

So do you guys think the best idea would be 13T pinion with 13.5T brushless?

Should I risk a lipo 2s?

Thanks again for your help fellas. Lets hope I haven't fried my esc.

:) The sport tuned is not a real competition motor. It is just a light upgraded 540 with different timing. In my mind, you can run with a 2s lipo. The ezrun is designed to support this type of stick. You could run longer with it. But you must put a 13th pinion on your motor. After, like you can't put smaller one, if the heating problem is always here, you can modify the map of the esc with the prog card.

Thanks again for everyone's help. So I discovered that I was using the 15T pinion. So I removed it and as I was adding the 13T pinion I made a discovery. My ezrun 9T brushless is fried. I'm not saying it doesn't work but when I spin the rotor by hand I find there is a bit of resistance every now and then. That never use to happen before. I opened the motor from and found a lot of, what looked like grind dust. My guess is the rotor has too much contact with the windings inside the motor. Anyway, either way I'm guessing I pushed this motor too hard. Can anyone suggest a good 13.5T motor and esc that are supershot friendly? Thanks again fellas
