Re: What is it for?? (Group C related) 14 years 8 months ago #7380

the center of the chassis was not to be covered,it attached to the sides and the rear of the main tub. It was not to be like the Top Force where it covers the whole bottom of the chassis, the center was exposed so you did not loose the ride height which is much more important for on road cars than off road cars. Trouble came about tryig to make it fit all of the C car type bodies and also to allow the T bar to have full movement.Another issue was the front of the car is height adjustabe for tuning. This would have been limited with a full one piece cowl the option to adjust the front suspension ride height for tire wear would have been lost. Also an undercowl is just not very useful for the C car chassis unless you run at very high speeds. For scale it would have been nice looking but just serve no other porpose. The C car chassis just wasnt very popular and the people that needed an undercowl just made one thierselfs. So it was not made.
There are only two designers that work on the whole direct drive line up. From the F102 to the current F104 it has been one guy for the main car and one guy for the options. So you can see that Tamiya does not use to many people for the direct drive line up of cars, and why most of them are very similar.

I dont know anything about Sand Schorchers but direct drive Tamiya I have a pretty good handle on. It very interesting for me. I hope that I can share what I know a little.
One thing about the C car chassis. People always wonder why Tamiya made the Street Devil and Daytona stocker. Both of the cars were pushed by one man here in Japan. He is a big fan of American racing and several time talk with the Tamiya designer about doing something. Yada-san was importing Parma and Bolink bodies and had a ciruit where people were running C cars all ready with the Parma/Bolink Bodies. So Tamiya made them and there was a boom in America car popularity, but it died out as people started useing better chassis instead of the c car. Even though it died out there are still people running American type cars, The F103GT even has its own velodrome class. And Yada san still has his shop but he does Bike and 1/5th scale cars these days.
I have read some of Edou about his Ferrari,if you need help give me a shout as I have ran most of them.

Thanks, I had only looked at the details of the Group C so far and the F chassis quest is quite something...
I like a steep learning curve like that though and any inside info is very welcome.

They're cars that came a few years later (after the 58109 Nissan), the 58153 Daytona Thunder and 58174 Street Devil.
The quality of the pics isn't great :

Easier to get excited about some other cars in the chassis line for myself...
Although it doesn't look half bad as a hot rod :

Looks a bit ZZ Top....
Prefer the nascar.
Now look, I'm looking at group Cs again! Stop it, I haven't got any money & there's nowhere to play with one...
