Hi Tamiyabase friends, will a Novafox's jazzy gold wheels fit the vintage Sand Scorcher's axles and roll well based on their manuals (2010 Sand Scorcher manual though is on the left, Novafox's manual is on the right, although the wheel nuts have different names one is BA4 the other BD2, it says it's both 4mm)? If the Novafox' cool jazzy gold wheels with tires are compatible and it's lower than the Sand Scorcher's wheel diameter, I plan to have a lowered look (if they are the same or the NovaFox's is bigger, at least they's catchy gold). My goal is the looks but it should still be drivable just fine for show.

If the Nova's wheels can't be made to work with the Scorcher's axles, could the gold wheels of the Hotshot be used on the Scorcher? If you could recommend other metallic gold wheels for the Sand Scorcher that'd be welcome.

Thank you in advance.

God bless RC racers.

Since the orginal Sand Scorcher (508016 manual is on this site) came with one piece 5 lug wheel adapter it is not possible to change out that 5 lug hub for something else.
You have two options.
#1 Change the wheel axle to the 2010 and run whichever wheel adapter to suit your wheels of choise.
#2 Get hold of HPI 6120 wheel adapter to clip onto your orginal one piece 5 lug adapter and run any 12mm hex driven wheel you want.

Fox uses a 4 hole wheel adapter and Hot Shot and several others uses a triangle wheel adapter.
As long as you install 2010 SS wheel axles you can run any wheel adapter type you want.

And please stay to one topic if it's regarding the same vehicle, in this case Sand Scorcher.

Hi thanks a lot for the precision answers (technical and with deeply technical suggestions), how I wish I had a vacuum metalization machine to turn plastic into shiny yellow gold, gold plated look. My goal is not performance but to make it look cool but still chill drive it in the house and the cemented streets (not racing anymore at this time) :-).  I'm after the gold color coz' I can't find a method to prep the current wheels, I can't find a spray paint that'll make it look as if the plastic was anodized gold or plated with gold (you may know how to do that and know the best tutorial and you may know such a gold paint that truly looks like gold plated or anodized gold metal wheel coz' usually metallic spray paints look like dull chrome or dull gold). I do see manufacturers who're able to chrome plastic and make it look like it's real metal, I wonder how they do that on plastic?

Clarifying, if I buy the HPI adapter and use it directly on my original one piece axle, I can then use the 12mm hex wheels say from RedCat Lowrider wire wheels and also Fox's and Hotshot's wheels (without replacing the axles into the 2010 SS axles), I just need the adapter and it'll fit almost any wheel? If I got that wrong (I need to buy both the 2010 SS's axles as well as the HPI 6120 adapter for 12mm hex wheels, what keywords should use to find the adapters for the gold wheels of the Fox Novafox and the Hotshot

I can't link yet being a new Tamiyabase member but will the cheapest HPI Racing 1/10 Scale Super Star Rear Wheel Adapter Set HPI6120 B34 at US$10.25 w/ free shipping do just fine from the seller CDSwholesale on eBay  (I may have bitten off more than I can chew in reviving this vintage Scorcher the budget is equalling a brand new 1:10 Tamiya or two brand new Tamiyas like the rereleased Grasshopper, Wild Willy 2 or Frog :-D  but it's for higher cause, it's for someone who owns it but now can't move essentially)?

I actually wanted to make the vintage Sand Scorcher have gold lowrider wheels (wired wheels) or even better a gold 14, 16 or 18-spoked so the wheels are durable. The lowrider wheels from Red Cat is more for show and will break if I guess it makes a dirt jump) I take even with the HPI adapters nor the 2010 axle, it won't be compatible? It's a 12mm hex and is 75mm (the Sand Scorcher's ground clearance I believe is 33mm, I could be wrong). The spiky wheels of the Sand Scorcher has these dimensions:

Type:    Rubber tyre with wheel
Tyre diameter:    88 mm
Tyre width:    51 mm
Wheel diameter:    40 mm
Wheel width:    36 mm

The Red Cat Low Rider Wheel which is for their MONTE CARLO, SixtyFour R/C has these specs:

12mm Hex
Diameter including the wheels: 75mm

The Redcat SixtyFour (they said it's 64 even though it's 1979) manual can be navigated like so: I can't link yet but if you have time, the manual is in support (upper left of the Redcat site) then look for SixyFour (scroll down).

Recommendations are always welcome. If you know other metallic yellow, jazzy gold (not Subaru dark gold) wheels that's for 5 lugged axles and 4mm hex, that'd be welcome. preferably 14 to 18-spoked (straight spoke, simple straight one, I want it to look like the wheels of a wheelbarrow but in jazzy metallic yellow gold) one.

God bless RC modifiers.

For running the Redcat wheels which has 12mm hex drive, I would have gotten the 2010 wheel axle for the SS (#19808265).
Then you only need 12mm hex of some sort and the 2x10mm pin for the hex. This pin is nearly standard on all kits.

Buy using the 2010 wheel axle you can also use oher types of wheel adapters.
Here is aluminium one for the Fox wheel fitment
www.ebay.com/it...R6qZ3MLWZA

For Hot Shot etc wheels
www.ebay.com/it...R66Z3MLWZA

Since the Sand Scorcher is ball bearing fitmet up front, you need adapter to go from 12mm hex wheel to 5mm bearing axle.
These works, but don't tighten the nut all the way.
Other solution is to drill a 12mm hex with 8mm drillbit and install a 850 (8x5x3) flange bearing on the backside of the 12mm hex and drill the wheel with 8mm as well and insert a 850 flange bearing from the front side.
www.ebay.com/it...3855875940

If you do the 12mm hex conversion on your SS, the Fox wheels will bolt straight on.

Runniing the HotShot type wheels will also involve drilling the front wheel and the triangle wheel adaptor with 8mm to fit 850 flanged bearings.

So unless running bearing front wheels and 12mm hex in the rear it's not that straight forward as you would think.
But I do very much like the DIY aspect of this hobby

Regarding getting gold wheels.
Either spray then with colorworks gold first after having a black base.
Or start with chrome wheels you spray with clear yellow. You will find that the gold Tamiya wheels really started as chrome (as seen on the backside of some wheels)

That's intense :-) but doable.

So the Fox wheel would be the most straight forward, I just buy the HPI adapter (I don't need to buy the 2010 axles?  it's 30 USD but if I have to buy that the budget will need to adjusted) and put that over the one-piece axle+hub and the Fox wheel could just be screwed in (it has same bearing as the Sand ScorcherI believe)? Or all of these involves buying first the 2010 axles coz' that one has separate hubs, can I do this: I just drill a hole through the adapter (12mm hex, Fox or Hotshot adapter) bolt it to the holes with the nuts and bolts through the holes of the one-piece axle+hub combo of the vintage Sand Scorcher?) the the hex tire screw secures it with the usual screw pressure (maybe even use a bit of glue that's touch but semi-permanent like E6000 or carbon fiber epoxy or this won't hold the wheel when it spins- I'll probably not throttle it 100%, just chill ride, just look cool with gold rims :-) I don't race anymore)?

If I decide to spray paint with black or chrome as base, what brand of clear yellow do you suggest? I take that's transparent yellow (I've never seen one, I've only seen opaque).

By the way do you know what the back of the Redcat wheels looks like? Does it also have a slot for the pin similar to the Fox and Hotshot similar to the back of the fan of an electric fan? Update: I get how the RedCat attaches now via a Redcat Lowrider wheel replacement, I wonder if the Redcat I showed you is wide enough so it doesn't look weird for the back tire. The one on the Youtube video I saw entitled 'Redcat 64 How to change the wheels' both wheels seem to have the width of a Tamiya buggy's front wheels, I wonder what that'll look like on the Scorcher but the one I showed you may be wider (Redcat emailed but didn't tell me the width of the wheel with tires). I hope I get to solve all these pieces of puzzle, it's a challenge.

Thank you very much again- big help.

Thank you.

If you buy the HPI adapter you are locked to run 12mm hex.
With the 2010 axle shaft you can swap to any wheel adapter that uses a pin.Simple as that.

Redcat wheels will fit any 12mm wheel hex (12mm is the diameter, not width and are standard on all 1:10 vehicles unless some vintage vehicles).

There is no need to glue anything.
If you buy a locking 12mm wheel hex type, that is if you use the 2010 axle, it will stay on the axle when you remove the wheel. (uses m2 bolt to lock and will be included with the wheel hex).

To run Fox wheels you need the 2010 wheel axles and the 4 peg wheel adaptor for the rear.
Use the link from previous reply
Orginal 4 peg wheel adaptor is part of D tree on Nova Fox #19000546

Hi, truly learning here (getting to learn the technical names), I thought the 12mm hex was the width of the rear and front axle which is 5mm on the non-threaded part and 4.88mm something on the threaded part (for both the rear and front axles). I get the adapters and how rear wheels are mounted, now.

For the front axle (no problem for the Fox which uses the same almost I think), if I go for a 12mm hex as well for the front as well like the RedCat's Lowrider, is there an adapter for the front? What terms would I search for? HPI seems to only have one for the rear. I am open to DYI mods if no adapter exists.

Thanks again advance for the patience and the big help.

The only adapter to run 12mm hex driven wheels is these. Just don't tighten the wheel nut all the way. A 5x8mm bearing between wheelnut and wheel might be smart. Tamiya calls them 850 bearing. Most hobby shops will have that bearing size
www.ebay.com/it...3855875936

Here is some visual pictures that might explain...
SS one piece wheel axle and said HPI adapter

It clamps on like that and then you can run any 12mm hex wheel...

Here a touring car wheel...

Imagne this is the 2010 SS wheel axle...

In this case we install a locking type 12mm wheel hex..

And same touring car wheel...

And here with the Fox type 4 peg hole wheel hex..

It still uses a slot for that pin..

Thanks huge help visualizing. I need to buy two sets (US$10 a set- US$20 in all) then, 1set/a pair for the rear and one set for the front so any 12mm hex (for 5mm axle) wheel fits (12mm has more styles, I noticed)? Or this set has 3 adapters or 4 adapters (there are 8 parts in the photos it seems) I take so it's compatible different types of hubs? After that would it now be compatible with Redcat's 12mm hex Wheels (with tires): for the front axle I take I just insert in the 12mm Hex plastic (I'm planning to install RedCat's lowrider wheel which is challenging but if I get to mod that into the Sand Scorcher it may look the coolest and also the others would be easier to work with other gold wheels that don't look painted gold like the Fox's and the Hotshot's though not a fan of the circle holes design on the Fox and Hotshot but they're backups)?thanks again, it take a lot of effort to modify but God-willing it'll be worth (in the least I'm learning a lot :-) ).

Hi RC friends, If you want to put bearings like this (see attached photo)

for the Redcat Gold 26" Lowrider wheels, how many is needed per wheel? One bearing or two per wheel?

Also what's its dimension: diameter and width with the tires (if you know how deep is its hub that's be a great bonus so that how much it protrudes with the tires can be determined).

Thank you in advance

God bless RC modifiers.
