Is a ghost really a monster? I'm not so sure ....

After my 74501 Spray-Work Air Brush System Set broke after 5 minutes use I'd been on the look out for another one, maybe to use as is, maybe to cannibalise parts.
A cheap one came up on eBay that looked well used, but pretty complete & had a nice box. I was aware of the dirt & paint spatter, but the dirt in the vents and in the bottom of the hose compartment made me wonder if it had spent time in a muddy puddle for a while. It was actually pretty clean on the inside, so I think I had just spent a few years at the back of a shelf in someone's shed. I don't think the inside of the airbrush had ever been properly cleaned, there was evidence of layers of blue, grey, black, silver, and brown paint residue, the hole in the bottom of the paint cup was particularly grim & was choked down to about a third of the size it should have been. The compressor seems to work ok, there's a constant stream of air so both gearbox outputs must be working, and there can't be any splits (at least not yet) in any of the four bellows. the clear air hose had really deteriorated though, shedding something that was both sticky and oily at the same time. I cleaned it off the outside, but I could see it getting blown through the tube & getting increasingly nasty as it progressed, the section in the airbrush was also fully of verdigris, which was completely blocking partd of the brass mixing chamber. I think it's the same 3mm ID, 5mm OD tube used in a lot of Japanese 2-stroke bikes of the 70s and 80s (and probably beyond) so have already ordered a replacement lenght. I hope this one works out, it seems like exactly the right tool for doing the blotch camouflage on my SRB Kublewagen Attachments:

They are ghosts. And very less fun than the original ones.... and ours are potatoes based. |

mine has the same matter a oily tube and my other one had a opened compression chamber. I have to check the one I have here. I didn't use it since a lot of time.

New tube arrived, lengths are 945mm for the air hose (could do it longer but there is a finite amount of space in the storage compartment), 90mm for the bit inside the spraygun, and 50mm for the bit inside the compressor.
Note how goop that was spread through the old tube has condensed out - I don't think that would do anyone's paint finish any good Before: After: Attachments:

I don't think I ever posted pics of the vintage one before I got to paint - it was fairly described on eBay & was missing mirrors & brackets, body clip & spacers, number plates, door handles, driver and the lower half of of the nose + indicators & chrome fittings. It also had a big crack in the roof and a chunk completely missing from the right rear arch.
Unfortunately I've left it far to long to retrieve the original photos from eBay & I failed to take any on arrival, so all that exists is one thumbnail: Paint stripping was dramatic at first, but took multiple tries to get it all off: Start of repair to rear arch, lots of sanding required: Attachments:

Rear arch repair & paint isn't perfect, but I'm quite pleased with it overall - so much so that I want to look at it as is for a bit longer before I put the decals on.
Chassis is a mostly "mk.1" or somewhat early if you prefer, but has been thoroughly cleaned & rebuilt with lots of old (but better) parts & some new ones. It's been hanging around for some time without a clear idea of what I was going to do with it & has mostly been sitting without a body, or been used as a mule for photos of various Rough Rider bodies - but I think it has found a keeper now Attachments: |
