I did the first successful test drive today.
Hot here today with nearly 28 degrees so the test was short. Speed was good at 40mph or so at ca 60% throttle. Stopping was a bit problem as the back kicked out. I suspect my esc is currently in direct forward/reverse mode without brakes. I don`t have a program card yet so I might get one, or swap out for the Savöx esc I have which do have a program box in the package. Since my Radiolink transmitter do have ABS feature I will turn that on and add about 20-30% drag brake and go from there. The current servo have to go as it is sticky and don`t center very well. Here a pic after the test run. Did test without body fitted. And turns out my radiolink receiver has gyro built in it so no need for the Skyrc one.. In the afternoon my mate came by and left me with his bike GPS. Had a bit luck as I did not need to make a mount for it. The shockless crossmember and motor wires are perfect to hold the GPS in the right place. And the GPS fits in the rear windscreen very well. GPS is dead right now so I will charge it to see if it holds power over the weekend. My mate also gave me a 10kg ish digital servo and I swapped out the old one as well. Steering is much better now. He also came with a 5.5 turn motor which I will test. But first I will swap out the esc for the one I have programming box for and see how the current motor performs. Then I go back to my 4500kv motor which has wires. If this has less performance than the current 9000kv one I will test the 5.5 turn motor that need wires to complete it. I will not go official on Youtube with speed test before I have fitted the TT02B turnbuckles, that will make my car legal for the class.

I returned the Traxxas turnbuckles today and instead got two 5x13x4mm bearings and a Hobbywing programming card.
First I removed to 850 flange bearing on the front side of the front wheels, fitted a narrow 5x4mm sleeve, then the 5x13x4 bearing and a 4mm normal nut. Wobble is gone now. Much better! And the prpgramming card.. And as I suspected it was set to Forward/Reverse only, not Forward/Brake/Reverse as it should. I also set the drag brake to 20% (auto brake when let go of throttle), brake to 100%, intial brake as drag brake (20%) and reverse 100%. Should be a lot better to drive now. Punch is set to level 6 of 9. Should be at 7 out of the box, but was set to 5. (Punch=how hard it accelerates). Within a week I hope I have the body painted and ready to do propper speed runs. Tomorrow the TT02B turnbuckles is supposed to turn up, so I will finish the steering if so.

Yesterday the TT02B turnbuckles arrived.
And installed. The 32mm ones is a tad too short for my liking as it only has about 5 thread engagement on each side. Will try to find a 35-38mm one.. My mate gave me a old unused Marquant 720p action camera. We suspected the battery was dead after all these years (probably something like 15 years), and that was correct. I opened it up and they use 2x 220mAh 3.7 batteries which will be easy to replace. My LHS has 220mAh ones in stock at 3 dollars each so I will pick up a couple next time I visit. And today I painted the body. Wing was ready first. Yep. it would be hard to not spot this one Bright colors oh yes I will install lights and diffuser later on after the challenge. Between all these stickers I hope I can pick something that works with the body colors. From the Würth decal set I will only be using head and taillights, Ford oval, air vents, Zakspeed decal and window decals. Tomorrow I will clean up and fit decals and secure the wing. |

Got a very late start today due no sleep last night and by mid day I was dead tired so I had to sleep a few hours. Anyway I got started on the livery. Usually I`m not fond of lots of stickers, but this looked too plain. Finally I got to use stickers I`ve collected over the years... Still have to do the other side and the rear + add a few more decals. |

The body is done!
I had to do this as I hate how Traxxas sue everybody. Not to forgetting their first buggy was a direct copy of the Nikko byggy. Fine for them to steal designs, but if you do or use names that is similar in any way that Traxxas use, they will sue you!!! Some pictures outside befor the first test 2 days ago. I did lost a wheelnut so now all of them are Loctited. Due to too much activity and heat yesterday I have fatigue. I will try a proper test run tomorrow or next day. There has been 20-40mph winds over the weekend and today there is next to nothing. But in 2 days time it will pick up again and are forecasted to 27mph wind gusts, which is not good for speedrun!! And I finally figured out how to show max speed on the Garmin Forerunner 201 gps. Needs to put on the timer and then put on the max speed screen. When doung a new run hold the reset button for 3 seconds to start fresh. I got a very hold unused action camera from a mate with dead batteries. Due to the heavy corrosion on the small pcb attached to one of the two batteries, I had to skip it and solder the new batteries together and directly to the camera. Worked fine when dissamble, but when put together the camera will only have the status led lit, with a totally dark screen. Even charged it overnight and no difference! So that project was a deadend! But from one of my other mates I borrowed a Gopro Hero3 camera. He struggled to connect to his phone, but if it worked on mine I could borrowed it. I managed to connect it to my phone, but will only connect about 1 of 10 times, so a bit annoying... With the securing bits from the dead action camera, I was able to use one of the mounts with the Gopro camera and mount it to my transmitter as the Radiolink RC6GS has the correct 1/4"-20 thread on top of the transmitter. Underways in the post I have bought a mounting kit so I can mount my phone to the transmitter if I wish. Basicly a 1/4-20 to 1/4-20 double head screw to mount something with same thread size. I tried to buy a 1/4-20 bolt or setscrew to do the same, but standard bolt stuff is really hard to get here in Norway. Metric is our standard. But now that I have figured out the GPS and have a camera, I*m ready to film my speedruns |

My speedrun attempt today did not go according to plan..
My plan was to setup the car with steering trimmed and then do the whole spec and run video, never got there.. As soon as I go off the throttle the backend lifts the rear tires off the ground and due the good grip up front the whole car turn around and either spin outs or flips on the roof. I did manage to record the speed and when I hit the ditch in this video I`m doing 45mph (72kph). My top speed of the 4-5 passes was 51.3mph (82.55kph) and there was still a lot of throttle left. I need to get it stable before I can really lean on it. 70mp is not that far away... After a few tumbles I lost all of the body clips and I forgot to bring extra, so the sesion ended early. There was also a lot of traffic, so I need to do it earlier or later in the day (today at 6-7 in the evening)- Next speed run test will be on Friday me thinks... www.youtube.com...BmYlDveTJM No damage on the chassis, but body got a few skidmarks on the roof and rear spoiler also touched a bit. About 1.5cm of the tire bead got unglued, but that`s easy fix. I have a few ideas to test to keep the rear on the ground. Not fond of cutting the rear valance if I can avoid it. Tonight I have fitted a ducktail on the end of the orginal Zakspeed rear spoiler in hope of more downforce. |
