I'm now thinking more on the lines of this cheap generic one - it buzzes like a cheap Dremel clone at peak revs, but it costs a quarter what the Proxxon does

This may be a good option JR ? Surely you already have a drill

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

You already have a tail stock which you add the chuck to, How about picking up a tail stock quill to support you material ?
...

Thank Andy, but I did think about that - I already have centres for it (including a live one) - the problem is there's nowhere for it to fit on the on the workpiece as at that point the 7mm counterbore has already been cut.

An alternative cutting order to use a tailstock centre would mean leaving the counterbore until last - but then I'd have to grip the piece in the chuck part way up the 8mm OD, leaving part of that, all of the taper & all the 12mm OD out in the breeze, unsupported.

I did look at those & initially discounted them as looking a bit flimsy - and a lack of stiffness in machine tools is a bad thing, just as it is elsewhere.

Overnight though I've been thinking about the probable lack of torque from my "preferred" mini drill press, so one of those might be a better option.

Finished one last night. I don't have a lathe. So everything is done by hand and a drill. It took awhile but is done and I am please with it..
