The wheels took some time - but there was quite a lot to do:
Faces of the kit 5-spoke "alloy" wheels skimmed - not perfectly flat as I didn't want to take off any more than the plating where the nuts bear down, and as it is the flat parts of the spokes are probably down to about 0.5mm here. That's not a problem as there's a lot of reinforcement on the back + parts to go on the front ... Plating stripped off with caustic soda. The sides & backs were clear very quickly, but the fronts (especially the edges) needed the help of the ultrasonic tank as there seemed to be a layer of lacquer or something similar on there... Wheel inserts were a simple 1mm disc, but the domed pressed bulges needed to start way thicker - two layers of 3mm sheet glued & clamped together ... Dichloromethane crystalising out on the brush: Outer edges of the domes taper turned + filed/sanded curved: Inner curves were next, counterbored then taper turned ... ... then filed & sanded round, before filling the joint between the layers: Inserts & domes glued in, along with very simple fake wheel nuts:

Made a light card mockup of the Laplander body - sides didn't need tweking at all (other than resizing as a whole to suit the CC-01 wheelbase) but front needed 3 iterations to get right due to inevitable parallax errors in the original photo. Rear end kept the width & angles from front end but the rest is just sketched in (or guesswork) due to unsatisfactory photo sources ... I think it'll work as is but I might narrow the door a little and the window proportionally more ...
Real body will sit a few mm lower & won't be held up by cocktail sticks |

The Volvo is great! We used it in the military and called it Volvo Valp (Puppy). I was not even aware that was not it's real name.

I've moved on to the basic structure (+ elements that were much easier to do at an earlier stage rather than later) ...
Working on the plans: Side parts cut out: Temporary Correx bracing so I could build the front & rear end: Ends done, internal bracing: Filling outside joins: Sanded back & edges rounded, this is how it sits now: |

It's taken a long time to make any appreciable progress on this - it might look very slab sided, but the Laplander has a lot of fussy details whn you start to look closer...
Roof ribbing & sliding hatch ... there should alos be a number of recessed tie down points, but the photos I have of the roof are very poor, plus they would have been very fiddly to make, difficult to retrofit, and would have been obscured by the roof rack I'm planning for later - so i wimped out. Wheelarch/Sill spat detail - it's heavier section than it should be, I think I was influenced a bit too much by the diecast version... Grille - indicator lenses are from the side of a CD case, but the rest (including headlamp bowls & waffle section) are hand made from styrene sheet: Front mount uses the standard CC-01 "tongue": Rear was going to be a turnbuckle affair, but this seemed easier on balance: Windows - the fussy recess around most of the windows took a lot of work with the Dremel, a lot of sanding, plus separate window frames & unseen support pieces; front sliding windows haven't worked as well as I'd hoped so I will probably revise them even if it means deviating from the 1:1 version a bit. There's a lot further to go yet - bumpers, a lot of ribbing details, the front door "hamster cheeks" ... i'm still drawing up the plans & writing up the process for TB articles, this is work in progress on the detail parts so far: |
