Looks like HPI skips a beat and goes straight to 20T. They are very affordable.
With the cheaper motors you're never exactly sure how good the one is you will get.
They're usually generic Chinese built (not that that's bad in itself nowadays) and used by many brands.
But that's what keeps the price down...

Tamiya, Lrp and Orion should be more reliable in that respect if you ask me...
But the last two brands are not that frequent on eBay.

Btw - I'm not the biggest expert on electro motors, I just have my preferences. ;)

the torque seemed lacking

That will definitely not happen with a double turns Orion... B)
Just hope you're ESC can handle it.

i have gone for this one.......
www.ebay.co.uk/...905wt_1054
may not be the best but its emptied my wifes paypal account
probably take about 2 weeks to get here so i will have to wait.
i took the hornet out for a spin today and was so dissapointed.
very slow and unresponsive, kept stopping for no reason, reverse only works occasionally, couldnt even get a wheel spin out of it in the wet!
i have checked all the connectors are a good fit on the motor and receiver. TX batteries are good, fully charged battery in the car.
i think the motor may be duff.
im going to take the motor out the hopper and fit that to the hornet and try it tomorrow see if it works any better

Shouldn't be doing that at all ... swapping out the motor to see if that's the problem/eliminate it is a sound idea - but cutting out like that sounds like low drive battery voltage to me...

Have you got a multimeter to check what it's delivering? I'd expect a healthy 7.2 nimh pack, fresh off the charger to be delivering something around 8.6V - significantly less than that & there's a problem ...

Could be that one or more cells in the pack has failed, your charger is duff, or the connections between charger & battery aren't up to scratch, have a higher reistance than normal, and the charger is peaking far too early.

Not going into reverse all the time, on the TEU101 ESC that's usually down to incorrect programming, moving the throttle trim tab after you've programmed it, changing transmitter, or, forgive me for saying it - operator error. Tamiya ESCs have a "double tap" reverse - i.e. from going forward you have to brake (stick down) to a stop, return the stick to neutral, _then_ reverse :)

ok so thats fixed one problem, as you say, i have to wack the tx in reverse once to stop it and then in reverse again to make it move.
i will put another battery on charge overnight and swap out the battery and motor tomorrow and see if it has any improvement.
i know the charger is good cuz the hopper runs fine

what are my options for CVA shock oil. does it have to be specific oil for these shocks or can i use thin hydraulic oil or even maybe cooking vegetable oil?
its not like a real car where specified oil is the only option, surely any oil will act as a decent damper fluid :silly:

Not sure I read the info I found on line right but vegetable oils seem to be too thick...
Motor oil looks alright when it comes to viscosity but I think hydraulic jack oil would be the best alternative.

cool, i am rebuilding the yellow shocks you sent me and hopefully fit them on the hornet. the hopper shocks are fitted but no oil in them. i may leave them like that as they seem firm enough with no oil but i will wait till i take it for a track day and see how it looks.
the yellow shocks are going to be carbon bodies with satin black top and bottoms. should look quite cool with the shiny springs and match the stealth look of the rest of the car

What you need is one of these:

It's a 7 turn double winding. 1KW roughly 140amp draw with load. I haven't been able to run it on my dyno, It's just too powerful.

Holy badword, how awesome is that! :woohoo:
That'll launch (or shred) the Hornet...
What factory produced it? And how's your dyno doing btw? B)

ok so i have put another battery in and swapped the motor from the hopper to the hornet and now it goes like a bat out of badword :woohoo: no cutting out and now ive got used to the double flick reverse (thanks jonny) ive just got to get the hang of controlling the dam thing
it does need bigger wheels but they will defo have to wait a while.
painted up the CVA's Edou sent me (thanks mate) and they fit straight on and look much better than the skinny original shocks. no oil in them yet but i will wait till i get a proper tarmac thrash with it to decide if it needs oil or not.
the 23t motor is in the post so i may fit that on the hopper to see how it runs
